Portrait of Soldiers Outside Barracks

Soldiers seated outside barracks with artillery. Photograph by William Henry Crosse, Royal Niger Company era (1886-1895).

A photograph depicting approximately 18 to 20 men seated in a row outside a long, open-sided structure with a corrugated roof. The seated men wear light-toned, loose-fitting garments and some wear head coverings. Behind the group, several pieces of mobile artillery with large wooden-spoked wheels are visible. One man stands to the right, wearing a dark-toned military uniform and a peaked cap. The scene is set on flat ground with a hillside in the background. The image was captured during the Royal Niger Company period, between 1886 and 1895.

The soldiers and artillery depicted are associated with the Royal Niger Company Constabulary, which was established in Lokoja in 1888. According to The Nigerian Army: A Century of Service, artillery served as one of the combat support arms for the Constabulary, which maintained its headquarters at Lokoja. This is further supported by The Guardian Nigeria, which documents the formation of the force in Lokoja during this era.
