The landscape depicted reflects the geography of the Niger River valley, where the Royal Niger Company maintained administrative headquarters in Lokoja. Prominent topographical features in this region, such as Mount Patti and the sandstone Cliffs of Idah, were frequently noted in historical documentation from Crosse's tenure between 1886 and 1895.

The light-toned linear feature on the mountain slope is characteristic of the river's rugged, rocky topography near its confluence with the Benue River.
