Asaba, the location of this photograph, served as the initial headquarters for the Royal Niger Company. The company received its charter of incorporation in 1886, which authorized it to administer the Niger delta and the regions along the banks of the Niger and Benue rivers.

The image is part of a series of lantern slides and negatives. Documentation from the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology indicates that this photograph may have been donated to the museum by Rev. Charles Henry Robinson.
