This image was originally part of a set of 29 lantern slides in box C161 and was formerly numbered "2" by T. Hoare. According to the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (MAA) Cambridge, the photograph was initially misclassified as originating from Oceania or Australia before being corrected to the Niger River region of Nigeria.

The photograph is linked to Rev. Charles Henry Robinson, who likely donated the collection to the museum. Robinson credited Dr. Crosse for the loan of photographs used in his 1900 publication, Nigeria: Our Latest Protectorate.
