Damagum Dismissal: PDP NWC Under Fire for Alleged Disregard of Court Order

The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has sacked its acting National Chairman, Illiya Damagun, despite a Federal High Court order restraining the party from removing him.

In a statement, the opposition lawmakers coalition’s spokesperson, Hon Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, said there was no court order to grant each other, and the party went ahead with its decision to remove Damagun from office.

The long-overdue removal of Damagun comes after he was suspended by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) due to “anti-party activities”.

Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja had ordered on Friday that no other person be recognized as PDP national chairman other than Damagun until the party’s national convention in December next year. However, Ugochinyere insisted that the court order had no bearing on the NEC’s decision.

Reacting to the development, Ugochinyere expressed dismay at the court order and said that it “came after Damagun has been suspended”. He maintained that Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed remains the acting chair while the party awaits its next NEC meeting.

The spokesperson also urged the courts to stay away from internal party affairs, arguing that the court should not intervene in the decision-making process of a political party.
