Edward Harland Duckworth
Edward Harland Duckworth (1894–1972) was a British science educator, colonial officer, and the founding editor of Nigeria magazine, whose photographic work left a visual record of early-to-mid-20th-century Nigerian culture. Serving as the Inspector of Education from 1930 to 1944, Duckworth taught at institutions such as the Government College in Umuahia.
Through Nigeria magazine, he brought both local and global attention to indigenous arts, crafts, and architecture, while actively campaigning alongside figures like Kenneth Murray for the preservation of Nigerian antiquities and the establishment of national museums.
Today, his legacy survives largely through the E.H. Duckworth Photograph Collection, a digitized archive of over 12,000 images at Northwestern University.
