Imo State Local Council Elections: Female Chairmanship Candidates Emerge Winners

In a historic move, two female chairmanship candidates and 14 vice chairmanship contestants have emerged winners in the just concluded Imo State local council elections.

Nkechi Mbonu has been elected as the chairman-elect for Okigwe LGA, while Chika Ibekwe won the Ngor-Okpala LGA chairmanship seat.

The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) presented certificates of return to the newly elected chairmen and vice chairmen across the 27 local government councils in the state on Wednesday.

According to ISIEC Chairman, Charles Ejiogu, the presentation was in line with the provision of the law establishing the Commission. He also announced that certificates of return will be issued to the councillors-elect in the next couple of days.

Ejiogu commended the electorate for their understanding and support to the Commission, as well as Governor Hope Uzodinma for providing the enabling environment to carry out the exercise.

He also commended the security agencies, the media, and the 17 political parties that participated in the exercise for their various supports.

Nkechi Mbonu, the chairman-elect for Okigwe LGA, expressed her gratitude to the people of Okigwe for giving her the opportunity to serve. She pledged to foster development in the area through innovative policies.

It is worth noting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) clinched all the seats in the 27 council areas and 305 electoral wards in the election that took place on Saturday, September 21.

However, some opposition political parties have rejected the outcome of the exercise, calling for its cancellation.
