LP Backs Boycott of Anambra LG Election

The newly inaugurated National Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party, headed by former minister Senator Nenadi Usman, has thrown its weight behind the growing calls for members to pull out of Saturday’s local government election in Anambra State.
Last week, the Labour Party spokesperson in Anambra, Theo Egbe, announced the plan to boycott the forthcoming September 28, LG poll due to alleged violations of the Electoral Act by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC).
Egbe claimed that the party did not conduct any primaries to nominate candidates nor submit any names to the state electoral umpire, and that the list of qualified LP candidates published by ANSIEC did not emanate from them.
The Usman-led committee of the Labour Party has now issued a statement backing the call by the Anambra LP executives led by its Chairman, Chief Ugochukwu Emeh, for members to pull out of the local government election.
The statement read, “The National Leadership of Labour Party is aware and is in total support of the position of Labour Party Anambra State led by Chief Ugochukwu Emeh (Chairman) and Okoli Akirika (Secretary) and other stakeholders that LP is not participating in the proposed Anambra State Local Government Election scheduled to hold on 28/9/24 based on violations of the Electoral Act and Nigerian Constitution.”
The committee also confirmed that it has not constituted any caretaker committee in any state of the federation and that the Anambra State LP is presently led by Chief Ugochukwu Emeh and Okoli Akirika.
Despite efforts to get a reaction from the LP National Chairman Julius Abure and National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh, both declined to comment on the issue.
