Flora Nwapa

Flora Nwapa (1931–1993) is widely celebrated as the "mother of modern African literature" and holds the distinction of being the first African woman novelist to have her work published in the English language with her 1966 debut, Efuru. Born in Oguta, Nigeria, she was educated at University College, Ibadan, and the University of Edinburgh. Nwapa dedicated her literary career to recreating Igbo life and customs from a distinctly female perspective, exploring themes of independence, motherhood, and the complex societal expectations placed on women. Beyond her writing, she was a dedicated public servant, working as a teacher and later serving as the Commissioner for Health and Social Welfare in Nigeria's East Central State following the Biafran War. She also established Tana Press, becoming one of the first African women to head an independent publishing company.
